This rabbet plane is 165mm long and 50mm wide, but the cutting edge on the blade is only 35mm. Its blue paper steel blade is razor-sharp and ready for the toughest hardwood. The plane is left-handed in that the blade projects all the way to the left side of the body, in the direction of the motion for rabbeting tasks. A right-handed version is also available (#162630).

Akio Uozumi is a third generation plane blade maker of the Tsunesaburo family of blacksmiths – the best known and most respected plane makers in Japan. The family built a reputation on providing what customers want and need versus following the most traditional course. This dedication to the customer has allowed their planes to be embraced by a new generation of woodworkers both in Japan and the United States.

We get asked quite a bit about the family name. Uozumi is the family name; the great-grandfather was Mr. Saburo Uozumi. The word Tsunesaburo is a combination of Tsune, meaning “always”, and Saburo, the original maker’s name.

Shunran means blue paper steel, and hina or hina kanna means short plane.
