Details
During a recent trip to Japan, the staff here at Japan Woodworker visited Mr. Nagao, a fifth-generation knife maker, at his family home and blacksmith shop in Miki City to see how the Higonokami, a traditional Japanese crafting knife, is made. Although an absolute treasure, it is meant to be used. Typically it is given to school children to sharpen pencils and work crafts. The blade is hand-forged from the highest quality Hitachi Blue Paper Steel #2 with HRC 63 in a centuries old process. Although the blade’s action is a bit stiff initially, it will loosen over time and can be retightened with a sharp rap on the rivet with a hammer. The folded brass handle fits comfortably in your hand for long use, and its initial shiny look will eventually mellow to a very rich patina.
