The main difference between white paper and blue paper steel is the ability of the white to take a very fine edge. Except for the two large roughing gouges, our violin tools are now the made of the finest white paper steel, hand-forged and hardened to Rc64-65 by Master Blacksmith Seigen. Each tool is individually forged and goes through numerous operations before being fitted with the finest quality Japanese Red Oak handle.

The unique feature of this gouge is that the blade tapers from the cutting edge to the shank, permitting greater flexibility and control when working in tight areas. An Outcannel Gouge is useful for most carving and for shaping curves on the necks of violins. Tool is razor-sharp, with approximately a #5 sweep. Blade length is 2-1/2", with an overall length of 9-1/4".
