60mm "Hole in Blade" Smoothing Plane - Tsunesaburo

Our "Blade with Hole" Smoothing Plane is hand forged by Tsunesaburo using special high carbon #1 blue steel (Aogami Hagane) which was manufactured over 50 years ago using charcoal forging and is no longer produced. This steel gives a very sharp, long lasting edge. The steel is then forge-welded onto a piece of soft wrought iron obtained from one of the original railway bridges in Japan. That is why there is a hole in the blade. Tsunesaburo then vacuum heat treats and anneals to harden the blade to RC 66. Finally it is sharpened to a razor edge and bedded at 45ø in a Japanese Red Oak Body. This plane is suitable for all North American soft and hard woods. Body width is 3˝ and body length is 10½˝.
